Has some fluffy Caturday!

This is the little boy we brought down from the barn. Needless to say, he is adjusting very well to being a house cat. He's a loverboy. Right now he still has the sniffles though. His name at the moment is Boogie. We haven't thought of any other names that would fit. The ones we had were way too serious for him. :)

The flumps

I don't know what it is, the past couple of weeks I've been very 'blah' about writing what I need to get done. It's not that I'm bored with things, it's just sitting down and putting the finger on the keys and tapping away. *sigh*

Maybe I should move my laptop from the couch and go sit in the dining room when I know I need to work on something and do it there. Grah! it's frustrating. Seriously frustrating. I've been doing flash pieces but nothing really big and the big pieces, I need to find someone to read and go crazy with the redpen.

Of course I have to finish those as well. >< Bleh.

In other news, we have a new resident in Casa el W-Q. Up at the barn where the roomie and I board our horses, there are some barn cats (all they need to do is catch the wild momma and maybe there won't be so many kittens every spring.). Anyway, there is this loverboy that is always following us around and just wants lovings. The Roomie brought him home. He is an orange tiger and his fur is fluff ball soft and when he's not roaming around, he just wants to cuddle. And all the other cats are all "Hiiiiiss. Interloper!" My one cat just runs away. He was the youngest and now he's the older brother now. :) He's not sure how to handle it. I'll have to post a picture

This cracks me up and makes me not want to rage like I normally wood when middle aged men talk about things they have no clue about. Kudos to the writer and actors who did this.

Also, that guy who played Red on That 70s Show, Nick Offeman, Tim Meadows, and just every man who did this video.

ETA: Okay, video embed is not working, so have the link to a very funny video of men making fun of conservative men who want to control women's choices.

Everyone, meet Harry Readshaw, a (supposed) Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (36th District). Mr. Readshaw recently co-sponsored Pennsylvania's HB1077, a bill that would require women seeking abortions to undergo endovaginal ultrasounds (something that's becoming a disturbing trend of late). One of his pro-choice constituents decided to email Mr. Readshaw and let him know in no uncertain terms that not only is he terribly misguided when it comes to women and their reproductive rights, but that he has also lost her vote.

So far this sounds pretty much what probably happens with any piece of legislation to pass through any state house, right? There's a bill or a proposed bill, voters either like it or hate it, and they then decide to let their representatives know how much they like it or hate it. Oh, but that's not enough for Mr. Readshaw. He apparently was so terribly affronted that a voter--a female voter told him women are intelligent competent people capable of making their own medical choices that he personally sent her a hand-written letter. Not only that, he pulled up her name, address, and voting record and made mention of it in the letter.

I know you're thinking, "Jade, that's some real bullshit. You can't possibly be for real." And I'll tell you I wish that it wasn't real, but it happened to Amadi of Amaditalks (a pretty awesome lady I follow on Twitter).

On Tuesday, after liveblogging my read-through of Pennsylvania’s HB1077, the bill which would force unwanted endovaginal ultrasounds on most persons seeking an abortion in the state, I sent a scathing email to my state representative, Harry Readshaw, who is a co-sponsor of the bill. To be entirely fair, I dislike my representative a great deal. He’s nominally a democrat, yet he’s entirely anti-choice, he also introduced a copy of the Arizona “papers please” anti-immigrant bill in this legislative session. I don’t know why he calls himself a democrat, but he does, and I hold him accountable.

[...]

Today, I received an oversized manilla envelope from Rep. Readshaw. Inside was a printout of HB 1077, a printout of some database’s information about me, indicating where I live, that I’m not the head of the household (why/how it knows this I do not know) and a few other things about me, like ethnicity, that no elected official should or needs to know. I’m going to have to get to the bottom of that.

As if that weren't enough in and of itself, Mr. Readshaw also discloses private medical information about his own daughter's reproductive status in a particularly heinous way of saying, "If she can't have babies, why should other women get to kill them?" (I shit you not.)

Seriously, this guy needs to be kicked out of office post-haste, like yesterday. And if you're in PA and are one of his constituents, you too can email him and tell him what a douchebag he is. Or, write to him.

Ugh. The past few weeks have been very blah. My writing has slowed down to doing 500 words every couple of days. It's only the last two days that I've kept it going and hope to get it to pick up. I need to sit down and work out what I want to do with two stories that are due the end of March. -_- Let alone the romantic scenes. (Cause I suck hard at those).

It's mid-February. When did that happen?

I need to figure out a way to work out some plot for the stories in a way that I feel is comfortable for me. I'm never good at plottng things out. I've been a pantser.

Pleh.

I'm running a test to see who's reading my posts. So, if you read this, leave me a one-word comment about your day that starts with the third letter of your LJ USERNAME. Only one word please. Then repost so I can leave a word for you. Don't just post a word and not copy - that's not as much fun

I need to work on some [info]origfic_bingo prompts today and a [info]musemuggers one around this headache I've had for about four days now.

So much fun.

I posted a small bit of flash fiction to those of you on the original fic filter (:) 2 people. Woot!). Let me know if you can see it. It's one of the prompts from my [community profile] origfic_bingo card.

Didn't really do much writing yesterday except for a flash piece and then we went to the Farm Show and wandered around. I'm so tired and my legs aren't happy with me when it was all over. As usual, the food was fantastic. Even though we only got the fried cheese cubes and a roast beef sandiwch. (OH MY GOD! SO FRESH! SO GOOOOOD!!!!) It was fun as usual and there was even a local winery there that had some REALLY good fruit wines and they aren't expensive at all. The Peach and Strawberry wines were divine. They were out of the black raspberry. Have to check them out when we're done at the barn and get a few bottles or see if they are in the state store 2 1/2 blocks from the house.

Striking a Pose (Women and Fantasy Covers)

Jim Hines tries out the poses on some urban fantasy books and tells you how there are some ways a spine is not meant to twist.

A while back, we had a discussion on the blog about the cover art for my princess novels. For the most part, I really like these covers, but they’re not perfect.

Now I could talk about the way women are posed in cover art … or I could show you. I opted for the latter, in part because it helped me to understand it better. I expected posing like Danielle to feel a little weird and unnatural. I did not expect immediate, physical pain from trying (rather unsuccessfully) to do the hip thing she’s got going on.

I recruited my wife to take the pictures, which she kindly did with a minimum of laughter.

Being me, I naturally couldn’t stop there. I headed over to Amazon and grabbed a sampling of book covers, primarily urban fantasy, and spent the evening doing a photoshoot. Click on if you want to see the results (or if you just really want to see a shot of topless Jim).

I'm going to set up a filter and put original fics behind a lock since I'm going to give [community profile] origfic_bingo a try.

If you want to be on this filter to see what I drabble out, let me know and I'll add you.

Out with 2011 and in with 2012

  • Dec. 31st, 2011 at 10:18 PM

Well, it’s still a few hours off till 2012 comes rolling in and I have time to think about what I want to do with the new year. One of them is hopefully be more focused than I have been on my writing. I’ve done better than I have in a few years.

I could list all the different projects that I have started that need work on but I was completely slacking the past two days when I could have doing a list.

1. Complete my Camp NaNo story
2. Do world building for my steampunk world
3. Work on two short stories that are due the end of April
4. Get more organized and get all my short stories in digital format to work with better
5. Be more active on the blogs that I’ve seen through the Write Campaign Group and those that I’ve seen that I found through doing flash fiction

To help with this all, I’m be doing the #WIP500 challenge for the entire year so hopefully that will keep me going. I’ll also be doing the #Nightgale flash fiction during January. Both badges are too the right on my writing journal that are linked to their respective leaders, Cara Michaels and Stevie McCoy.

And hopefully 2012 is a little easier on me financially. We’ll see how THAT works out as well.

Have a safe and Happy New Years! See you in 2012.
